A milestone birthday

Thomas R. J. Hoyer celebrates his 70th birthday

Hamburg, 25. November 2020 – The Hamburg entrepreneur Thomas R. J. Hoyer celebrates his 70th birthday on 1 December 2020. More than 40 years in the logistics sector have shaped the former Managing Director and current Advisory Board Chairman, who undertook his first management responsibility for the foreign division of the family business in 1980, and has guided the development of the international logistics company and accompanies it up to the present day.

Since 1946, the family-run transport business has developed into an international logistics services provider, specialising in handling and transporting liquid goods. Thomas Hoyer is very much aware of the successful logistics specialist’s roots, “My father, Walter Hoyer, founded the company in the wasteland of Hamburg’s ruins. He had a vision and a clear purpose in mind. Even today, I often think, ‘What might he say now?’.” Thomas Hoyer’s training years already began in his schooldays, when he regularly went to the headquarters in Hamburg after lessons. Later he studied in St. Gallen in Switzerland, followed by an apprenticeship in freight forwarding. Finally, after two years abroad, he took over responsibility for the foreign division of HOYER in 1980. As Managing Director, he steered the company’s destiny since 1986, before taking over as Chairman of the Advisory Board in 2007.

Thomas Hoyer has close links with the company. He says, “It’s my passion and is very dear to my heart.” Together with his sisters, he considers his task to be complete when the company is successfully handed on to the next generation. He takes an active role in politics and society. “I put forward clear views, and I don’t mince my words. It may not always be diplomatic, but people know where they stand with me.” Hoyer is active in numerous associations, including as an Executive Member of the Logistics Committee of the European Petrochemical Association, as a member of the board of HUPAC, and as a board member of the Hamburg Freight Forwarders Association. In his private life, Thomas Hoyer pursues his interests in politics and history, together with his passion for hunting and nature, as well as for 18th and 19th century paintings. He is often to be seen on his bicycle on his way to the company’s headquarters in Hamburg, where his door remains open to any employee even today.
